¹ Oh, the joys of those who do not follow evil men’s advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at the things of God. ² But they delight in doing everything God wants them to, and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to follow him more closely. ³ They are like trees along a riverbank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper. ⁴ But for sinners, what a different story! Proverbs 14:6 (AMP) ⁶ A scoffer seeks Wisdom in vain [for his very attitude blinds and deafens him to it], but knowledge is easy to him who [being teachable] understands.

Jude 17–19 (The Living Bible) ¹⁷ Dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ told you, ¹⁸ that in the last times there would come these scoffers whose whole purpose in life is to enjoy themselves in every evil way imaginable. ¹⁹ They stir up arguments; they love the evil things of the world; they do not have the Holy Spirit living in them.

How Then Can Man Be Justified and Righteous Before God?

It is a Message to Obey, Not Just Listen To

Mark 7:14–23 (The Living Bible) ¹⁴ Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand.  ¹⁵ Your souls aren’t harmed by what you eat, but by what you think and say!” ¹⁷ Then he went into a house to get away from the crowds, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the statement he had just made. ¹⁸ “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that what you eat won’t harm your soul? ¹⁹ For food doesn’t come in contact with your heart, but only passes through the digestive system.” (By saying this he showed that every kind of food is kosher.) ²⁰ And then he added, “It is the thought-life that pollutes. ²¹ For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts of lust, theft, murder, adultery, ²² wanting what belongs to others, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, pride, and all other folly. ²³ All these vile things come from within; they are what pollute you and make you unfit for God.”

[If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.]

James 1:13–25 (The Living Bible) ¹³ And remember, when someone wants to do wrong it is never God who is tempting him, for God never wants to do wrong and never tempts anyone else to do it. ¹⁴ Temptation is the pull of man’s own evil thoughts and wishes. ¹⁵ These evil thoughts lead to evil actions and afterwards to the death penalty from God. ¹⁶ So don’t be misled, dear brothers. ¹⁷ But whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God, the Creator of all light, and he shines forever without change or shadow. ¹⁸ And it was a happy day for him when he gave us our new lives through the truth of his Word, and we became, as it were, the first children in his new family. ¹⁹ Dear brothers, don’t ever forget that it is best to listen much, speak little, and not become angry; ²⁰ for anger doesn’t make us good, as God demands that we must be. ²¹ So get rid of all that is wrong in your life, both inside and outside, and humbly be glad for the wonderful message we have received, for it is able to save our souls as it takes hold of our hearts. ²² And remember, it is a message to obey, not just to listen to. So don’t fool yourselves. ²³ For if a person just listens and doesn’t obey, he is like a man looking at his face in a mirror; ²⁴ as soon as he walks away, he can’t see himself anymore or remember what he looks like. ²⁵ But if anyone keeps looking steadily into God’s law for free men, he will not only remember it but he will do what it says, and God will greatly bless him in everything he does.

For We Do Not Have a High Priest Who is Unable to Understand and Sympathize

Hebrews 4:14–16 (AMP) ¹⁴ Inasmuch then as we have a great High Priest Who has [already] ascended and passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith in Him]. ¹⁵ For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning. ¹⁶ Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].

Exodus 20:2–6 (The Living Bible) ² “I am Jehovah your God who liberated you from your slavery in Egypt. ³ “You may worship no other god than me. ⁴ “You shall not make yourselves any idols: no images of animals, birds, or fish. ⁵ You must never bow or worship it in any way; for I, the Lord your God, am very possessive. I will not share your affection with any other god! “And when I punish people for their sins, the punishment continues upon the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of those who hate me; ⁶ but I lavish my love upon thousands of those who love me and obey my commandments.

Exodus 20:5 (NASB95) ⁵ “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
