Isaiah 53:1–12 (The Living Bible) 1 But,
oh, how few believe it! Who will listen? To whom will God reveal his saving
power? 2 In God’s eyes he was like a tender green shoot, sprouting
from a root in dry and sterile ground. But in our eyes there was no
attractiveness at all, nothing to make us want him. 3 We despised
him and rejected him—a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We
turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was
despised, and we didn’t care. 4 Yet it was our grief he bore,
our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a
punishment from God, for his own sins! 5 But he was wounded
and bruised for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace; he was
lashed—and we were healed!
Matthew 27:24–31 (The Living Bible) 24 When
Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing, he
sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am
innocent of the blood of this good man. The responsibility is yours!” 25
And the mob yelled back, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26
Then Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after he had whipped Jesus, he gave
him to the Roman soldiers to be taken away and crucified. 27 But
first they took him into the armory and called out the entire contingent. 28
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and made a crown
from long thorns and put it on his head, and placed a stick in his right hand
as a scepter and knelt before him in mockery. “Hail, King of the Jews,” they
yelled. 30 And they spat on him and grabbed the stick and beat him
on the head with it. 31 After the mockery, they took off the robe
and put his own garment on him again, and took him out to crucify him.
Isaiah 53:6-7 (The Living Bible) 6 We—every
one of us—have strayed away like sheep! We, who left God’s paths to
follow our own. Yet God laid on him the guilt and sins of every one of
us! 7 He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he never said a
word. He was brought as a lamb to the slaughter; and as a sheep before her
shearers is dumb, so he stood silent before the ones condemning him.
Matthew 27:11–14 (The Living Bible) 11 Now
Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor. “Are you the Jews’
Messiah?” the governor asked him. “Yes,” Jesus replied. 12 But when
the chief priests and other Jewish leaders made their many accusations against
him, Jesus remained silent. 13 “Don’t you hear what they are
saying?” Pilate demanded. 14 But Jesus said nothing, much to the
governor’s surprise.
Isaiah 53:1–12 (The Living Bible) 8 From
prison and trial they led him away to his death. But who among the people of
that day realized it was their sins that he was dying for—that he was suffering
their punishment? 9 He was buried like a criminal, but in a rich
man’s grave; but he had done no wrong and had never spoken an evil word.
Luke 23:50–54 (The Living Bible) 50 Then
a man named Joseph, a member of the Jewish Supreme Court, from the city of
Arimathea in Judea, went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He was a
godly man who had been expecting the Messiah’s coming and had not agreed with
the decision and actions of the other Jewish leaders. 53 So he took
down Jesus’ body and wrapped it in a long linen cloth and laid it in a new,
unused tomb hewn into the rock at the side of a hill. 54 This was
done late on Friday afternoon, the day of preparation for the Sabbath.
Isaiah 53:10–12 (The Living Bible) 10 But it was the Lord’s good plan
to bruise him and fill him with grief. However, when his soul has been made an
offering for sin, then he shall have a multitude of children, many heirs. He
shall live again, and God’s program shall prosper in his hands. 11 And
when he sees all that is accomplished by the anguish of his soul, he shall be
satisfied; and because of what he has experienced, my righteous Servant shall
make many to be counted righteous before God, for he shall bear all their sins.
12 Therefore, I will give him the honors of one who is mighty and
great because he has poured out his soul unto death. He was counted as a
sinner, and he bore the sins of many, and he pled with God for sinners.
Luke 24:35–48 (The Living Bible) 35 Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had
appeared to them as they were walking along the road and how they had
recognized him as he was breaking the bread. 36 And just as they
were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them,
and greeted them. 37 But the whole group was terribly frightened,
thinking they were seeing a ghost! 38 “Why are you frightened?” he
asked. “Why do you doubt that it is really I? 39 Look at my hands!
Look at my feet! You can see that it is I, myself ! Touch me and make sure that
I am not a ghost! For ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do!” 40
As he spoke, he held out his hands for them to see the marks of the nails, and
showed them the wounds in his feet. 41 Still they stood there
undecided, filled with joy and doubt. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything
here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43
and he ate it as they watched! 44 Then he said, “When I was with you before, don’t you remember my
telling you that everything written about me by Moses and the prophets and in
the Psalms must all come true?” 45 Then he opened their minds to
understand at last these many Scriptures! 46 And he said, “Yes,
it was written long ago that the Messiah must suffer and die and rise again
from the dead on the third day; 47 and that this message of
salvation should be taken from Jerusalem to all the nations: There is
forgiveness of sins for all who turn to me. 48 You have seen these prophecies come true.

is to be interpreted by one’s own mind, 21 for no prophecy has
ever yet originated in man’s will, but men who were led by the Holy Spirit
spoke from God.]
