1 Corinthians 10:27–29 (CJB) 27 If some unbeliever
invites you to a meal, and you want to go, eat whatever is put in front of you
without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if someone says to
you, “This meat was offered as a sacrifice,” then don’t eat it, out of consideration for the person who pointed it
out and also for conscience’s sake—29 however, I don’t mean your
conscience but that of the other person. You say, “Why should my freedom be
determined by someone else’s conscience?
1 Corinthians 8:9–13 (The Living Bible) 9 But be careful not to use your freedom to
eat it, lest you cause some Christian brother to sin whose conscience is weaker
than yours. 10 You see, this is what may happen: Someone who
thinks it is wrong to eat this food will see you eating at a temple restaurant,
for you know there is no harm in it. Then he will become bold enough to do it
too, although all the time he still feels it is wrong. 11 So because
you “know it is all right to do it,” you
will be responsible for causing great spiritual damage to a brother with a
tender conscience for whom Christ died. 12 And it is a sin
against Christ to sin against your brother by encouraging him to do something
he thinks is wrong. 13 So if eating meat offered to idols is going
to make my brother sin, I’ll not eat any of it as long as I live because I
don’t want to do this to him.
Ephesians 4:29–5:6 (The Living Bible) 29 Don’t
use bad language. Say only what is good
and helpful to those you are talking to, and what will give them a blessing.
30 Don’t cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way you live. Remember,
he is the one who marks you to be present on that day when salvation from sin
will be complete. 31 Stop being mean, bad-tempered, and angry.
Quarreling, harsh words, and dislike of others should have no place in your
lives. 32 Instead, be kind to
each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you
because you belong to Christ. 1 Follow God’s example in
everything you do just as a much loved child imitates his father. 2 Be
full of love for others, following the example of Christ who loved you and gave
himself to God as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, for
Christ’s love for you was like sweet perfume to him. 3 Let there be
no sex sin, impurity or greed among you. Let no one be able to accuse you of
any such things. 4 Dirty
stories, foul talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, remind
each other of God’s goodness, and be thankful. 5 You can be sure
of this: The Kingdom of Christ and of God will never belong to anyone who is
impure or greedy, for a greedy person is really an idol worshiper—he loves and
worships the good things of this life more than God. 6 Don’t be
fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the terrible wrath of God is
upon all those who do them.
1 Thessalonians 5:9–22 (AMP) 9 For God has not
appointed us to [incur His] wrath [He did not select us to condemn us], but
[that we might] obtain [His] salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah)
10 Who died for us so that whether we are still alive or are dead
[at Christ’s appearing], we might live together with Him and share His
life. 11 Therefore encourage (admonish, exhort) one another and
edify (strengthen and build up) one another, just as you are doing. 12
Now also we beseech you, brethren, get to know those who labor among you
[recognize them for what they are, acknowledge and appreciate and respect them
all]—your leaders who are over you in the Lord and those who warn and
kindly reprove and exhort you. 13 And hold them in very high
and most affectionate esteem in [intelligent and sympathetic] appreciation of
their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 And we earnestly
beseech you, brethren, admonish (warn and seriously advise) those who are out
of line [the loafers, the disorderly, and the unruly]; encourage the timid and
fainthearted, help and give your support to the weak souls, [and] be
very patient with everybody [always keeping your temper]. 15 See
that none of you repays another with evil for evil, but always aim to show kindness and seek to do good to one
another and to everybody. 16 Be happy [in your faith] and
rejoice and be glad-hearted continually (always); 17 Be
unceasing in prayer [praying perseveringly]; 18 Thank [God] in
everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give
thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer
and Mediator of that will]. 19 Do not quench (suppress or subdue)
the [Holy] Spirit; 20 Do not spurn the gifts and utterances
of the prophets [do not depreciate prophetic revelations nor despise inspired
instruction or exhortation or warning]. 21
But test and prove all things [until you can recognize] what is good;
[to that] hold fast. 22 Abstain from evil [shrink from it and keep
aloof from it] in whatever form or whatever kind it may be.
1 Timothy 1:3–11 (AMP) 3 As I urged you when
I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on where you are at Ephesus in order that
you may warn and admonish and charge certain individuals not to
teach any different doctrine, 4 Nor to give importance to or
occupy themselves with legends (fables, myths) and endless genealogies, which
foster and promote useless speculations and questionings rather
than acceptance in faith of God’s administration and the divine training
that is in faith (in that leaning of the entire human personality on God in
absolute trust and confidence)— 5 Whereas the object and purpose of our instruction and
charge is love, which springs from a pure heart and a good (clear) conscience
and sincere (unfeigned) faith. 6 But certain individuals have
missed the mark on this very matter [and] have wandered away into vain
arguments and discussions and purposeless talk. 7 They
are ambitious to be doctors of the Law (teachers of the Mosaic ritual), but
they have no understanding either of the words and terms they use or of
the subjects about which they make [such] dogmatic assertions. 8 Now
we recognize and know that the Law is good if anyone uses it lawfully
[for the purpose for which it was designed], 9 Knowing and
understanding this: that the Law is not enacted for the righteous (the upright
and just, who are in right standing with God), but for the lawless and unruly,
for the ungodly and sinful, for the irreverent and profane, for those who
strike and beat and [even] murder fathers and strike and
beat and [even] murder mothers, for manslayers, 10 [For]
impure and immoral persons, those who abuse themselves with men,
kidnapers, liars, perjurers—and whatever else is opposed to wholesome teaching and
sound doctrine 11 As laid down by the glorious Gospel of the blessed
God, with which I have been entrusted.
